Job Purpose

The Duct Installer (Ducting Labourer) is responsible for the installation, assembly, and sealing of ductwork for HVAC systems in new construction projects. The role includes handling sheet metal ducts, flexible ducts, and insulation materials under the supervision of an HVAC Foreman or Site Supervisor while ensuring compliance with project specifications and safety standards.

Job Responsibilities

Ductwork Installation:

  • Assist in measuring, cutting, assembling, and installing ductwork as per approved drawings.
  • Handle and install galvanized, aluminium, and pre-insulated ducts (e.g., PIR, phenolic, or fiberglass).
  • Secure ducts using hangers, brackets, and supports as per industry standards.
  • Connect duct sections using flanges, slip joints, or TDC/TDF connections.
  • Install flexible ducts and ensure proper routing to diffusers and grilles.

Insulation & Sealing:

  • Apply insulation materials (e.g., fiberglass, rubber, or foam) to ducts to prevent condensation and energy loss.
  • Seal duct joints using adhesive tapes, sealants, and gaskets to ensure airtightness.
  • Install fire-rated ducts and fire dampers as per project specifications.

Site Work & Compliance:

  • Work under the supervision of an HVAC Foreman or Site Supervisor to complete assigned tasks.
  • Follow project drawings, specifications, and material schedules.
  • Ensure compliance with local HVAC codes and safety regulations.
  • Identify and report any issues in duct installation or alignment.

Job Requirements

Education: 

  • HVAC or Ducting Certification – Certification in HVAC systems, ductwork installation, or a related field. Relevant certification or trade qualifications from a recognized institution.

Experience: Minimum 2-5 years of experience in duct installation for new construction projects.

Experience with HVAC Tools & Equipment – Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, cutting tools, and duct-lifting equipment for duct installation, maintenance, and repairs.

Technical Skills:

  • Duct Installation & Maintenance – Skilled in the installation, repair, and maintenance of HVAC ducts, including round, rectangular, and flexible duct systems for commercial, residential, and industrial applications.
  • Ductwork Fabrication – Expertise in fabricating ductwork, including cutting, bending, joining, and sealing ducts made from materials such as galvanized steel, aluminium, fiberglass, and flexible materials.
  • Duct Insulation – Proficient in the application of insulation around ducts to prevent heat loss or gain and improve the energy efficiency of the HVAC system.
  • Airflow & Ventilation Systems – Experience in installing ventilation systems, air intakes, exhausts, and return ducts, ensuring proper airflow and compliance with system specifications.
  • Duct Pressure Testing & Balancing – Ability to conduct pressure testing and airflow balancing to ensure systems meet design specifications, including measuring air pressure, volume, and velocity within ducts.
  • Duct System Sealing – Skilled in sealing ducts using materials like mastic, tape, or caulk to ensure airtight and watertight connections, improving system performance and preventing air leaks.
  • Knowledge of HVAC Design – Familiarity with HVAC design principles, such as duct sizing, system layout, and ensuring that ducts are placed and installed according to building specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Cutting & Joining Duct Materials – Proficient in using hand tools, power tools, and sheet metal machines to accurately cut, shape, and assemble ducts for installation, ensuring that joints are tight and secure.
  • Duct Inspection & Troubleshooting – Ability to inspect ducts for damage, leaks, or poor performance, and troubleshoot issues such as air pressure problems, blockages, or improper duct alignment.
  • Knowledge of Industry Codes & Standards – Familiarity with local building codes, fire safety regulations, and international HVAC standards to ensure installations comply with legal requirements and best practices.
  • Cleanliness and Disinfection – Ensuring that ducts are properly cleaned and disinfected during installation and maintenance to prevent the buildup of dust, allergens, and contaminants in the ventilation system.
